Hello Friends,
In this tutorial you will learn how to create a cool Web 2.0 Glossy Badge with the GIMP.This multi purpose badge can be used on various themes like advertising,discount schemes,special offers or any other cause on a website.
Here’s the final outcome of this tutorial

Step 1
Create a new image of the size 600 * 450.
Step 2
We will now be designing the background first.Create a new layer.Select the first half of the image and apply the “Neon” gradient from top to bottom of the selection.
Step 3
Go to Filters-Light and Shadow- Drop Shadow and apply it with the following settings :-

Deselect your selection (Keyboard Shortcut - CTRL + Shift + A ) ,switch back to the background layer and apply a FG to BG gradient from middle to bottom of the image with Foreground color as “#aebcbf” and background color as “#798381″ .
Step 5
Your background is ready.It should look like this by now -

Create a circular selection at the middle of the image using the Ellipse Tool of the size 200 * 200 px.
Step 7
Create a new layer.Change your Foreground color to “#44bdee” and Background color to “#2cb0e3″ .And apply FG to BG Gradient as follows -

We will now be cutting off the upper part of the circle.Grab the path tool and create a path simillar to as shown below.

Go the path dialogs - path to selection and cut the selected area by Pressing CTRL + X and then paste it in a new layer.Hide the pasted layer by clicking on the eye button next to the Pasted Layer.
Step 10
Download the pattern.zip file from here.Extract it to the GIMP Pattern folder which is usually as C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\patterns .Selected the circle layer,create a new layer and grab the fill tool( Shift + B ).In the fill type option select Pattern Fill and select the downloaded pattern and fill it.
Step 11
Change the layer mode to overlay and opacity to 70%. You will have the following result by now -

Reset your colors by Pressing ‘D’ and then swap them by pressing ‘X’ i.e change your FG color to white and BG color to Black .Create a new layer and apply a FG to BG gradient as follows -

Set the layer’s mode to overlay .You will have the following image ready -

Go to Script-fu -> Layer Effects -> Inner Glow and apply it with the following settings

Create a new layer and fill the selection with a solid “#0d92b8″ color using the paint fill tool.Shrink the selection by 2 px using layer window -> Select -> Shrink .Now press the delete button of your keyboard to delete the selection.Here’s the result of the above steps -

Grab the path tool and create a path as shown below

Select the path ,create a new layer and fill the path with solid white color.Deselect everything by using CTRL + Shift + A .Go to Filters -> Blur - > Gaussian Blur and apply it with a 70 px radius.Set the layer’s mode to overlay.

Step 18
Switch to the layer which we had previously cut off and hided.Unhide the layer and Rotate it by 180 degrees using Layer - Transform - Rotate 180 Degrees

Move the layer in such a manner that it is aligned to the area from where it was cut as follows -

Select the cutted part layer.Change your FG color to “#6fd4f7″ and BG color to “#12b0e3″ and Apply a FG to BG gradient as follows

to achieve the following result

Duplicate the layer and set its mode to overlay to get a light color.

Go to Filters - > Light and Shadow - > Drop Shadow and apply it with the following settings -

Now Switch back to the main Circle layer.Select it and again apply a drop shadow to it with the following settings

Our Badge is Almost Ready.Now you can add text , images etc to it and rotate them by -39 Degrees to match with the badge.

the gradient didn’t work when i tried it and it’s not very specific in the beginning. I would like to know whatv settings were used with the gradient. I keep on getting one neon line.
I’ve got the same problem: I’m not able to apply correctly the neon gradient. Could you please be more precise?
