High Quality GIMP Tutorials

Whether you are a Harry Potter fan or not , you must have seen the title of the famous Harry Potter movies and loved the text effect. In this tutorial you will learn how to create the Stunning Harry Potter style text effect with the GIMP.Here’s the final result of this tutorial.

Harry Potter Text Effect

In this tutorial you will require three external things. The first one is the Harry Potter text.Second is a very useful script fu - “Layer Effects Script Fu” and third is a bluish gradient created by me for this tutorial.

Step 1

Go to GIMP Plugin Registry follow the intructions and install the script fu.On successful installation , it will create a menu “script-fu” in the image window. The gimp registry guys have tested it till version 2.42 but the script fu works on GIMP 2.6 in Windows 7 64 bit as well.

Step 2

Download the Harry P Font from the Mugglenet site.Install it by following this guide for different OS.

Step 3

Download this Gradient and install it by placing it in the “GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\gradients” folder in your respective OS.

Step 4

Begin by creating a new file.First of all we will create the background first. You can create your own background too and use it.Go to “filters->render->clouds->Solid noise” and apply it with a detail of 6.Name it as clouds.

Step 5

Create a new layer and fill it with “#0b1f21″.Put the layer above the “clouds” layer and set its mode to overlay.Duplicate the layer to create more darkness.

Step 6

Duplicate the “clouds” layer , put it above all 3 layer and set its mode to overlay. This will help to show up the clouds effectively.By now you should have something like below.

Step 7

Time to create the rain effects .Create a new layer named “rain” and fill it with black.Go to “filters ->noise->hurl” and apply it with a randomization of 15% and repeat 1.

Step 8

Now go to “Filters-> Blur -> Motion Blur ” and apply it with the following settings.

Step 9

Now change the mode of “rain” layer to overlay and place it below “clouds” overlay layer to achieve the following.

Step 10

Our background is ready. Now lets begin the real part.Using the Harry P font create text with size 160 and in a new layer named “hp” fill it with “#b7b7b2″.Hide the original text layer.

Step 11

Now go to script-fu-> Layer Effects -> Bevel and Emboss and apply it with the following settings.

Step 12

That looks cool in itself , doesnt it!

Step 13

Go to “Script-fu-> Layer Effects -> Satin” and apply it with following settings.

Step 14

Select the original text layer and apply “harrypotter” gradient on the selection in a new layer.Set the layer mode to overlay.Duplicate it and set the opacity to upper layer as 30%.This gives bluish touch to the silver effect.

Step 15

Your image is almost ready.Just add tag line to it with the same “bevel and emboss” and satin setting to create your own Harry Potter Title Image ;) .

For the “tag line”, I reccomend using the font “Lumos”. It’s the same font you see on the HP movie & book names, etc.

I actually had both fonts before I even found this tutorial. XD

This didn’t work for me at all :/
There’s just not enough instructions. I’ve been looking for a suitable GIMP tutorial and found myself asking way too many questions.

Having trouble with this instruction “…Now lets begin the real part.Using the Harry P font create text with size 160 and in a new layer named “hp” fill it with “#b7b7b2″.Hide the original text layer.”

What does this mean? Create a text layer and type in “Harry Potter” using the Harry Potter font, then create a new layer and fill that new blank layer with a gray color? That doesn’t make sense. Do I duplicate the text layer and then fill the new text layer with the color? What is the color of the original text layer?

Thanks for any help you can give. I’m a Gimp weekend warrior at the most, so consider me a newbe.

    Thanks again.

I got it to work after all. Next, how do can we add the white glow behind the text?
