Hello Friends,

In this tutorial you will learn how to create Cool and Glossy Transparent Lettering with The GIMP.This tutorial is inspired from its original Photoshop tutorial by PSD Tuts.This tutorial is meant for quite advanced users as it involves making use of some advance techniques including inner shadow,inner and outer glow and bevel and emboss.

Here’s what you will make with this tutorial.

Note:- You will need to download and install a script-fu that will help us to achieve the layer effects of photoshop.

Step 1

To begin ,create a new image of your desired size,I chose 600 * 450 for this tutorial.

Step 2

Fill the background with a desired dark color.We will be using a black gradient.Set your Background Color to “#44474c” and Foreground Color to “0d0d0e” and apply a FG to BG Radial Gradient from bottom right to top left as shown below.

Step 3

Now grab the text tool and write ”Q” at the center of the image of size 325 px.You can choose any font that suits good.Here we have used a font named “Sylfaen” which comes inbuilt with Windows.Set its color to “#12c32f”. You should have the following image now.

Step 4

Set the text’s layer opacity to “10″ and select it .Now go to the layer window - script fu - layer effects - inner glow and apply it with the following settings and color “#0fe132″ .

Step 5

With the text layer selected, go to layer window - script fu - layer effects - outer glow and apply it with the following settings and color “#0fe132″ .

Step 6

You will have the following results by now -

Now go to Filters - Light and Shadow - Drop Shadow and apply it with the following settings.You wont notice much difference with the use of drop shadow but this will reduce the high effect of outer glow in any other background other than black.

Step 8

Select the main text layer.Go to layer window - select - shrink and shrink the selection by 2 pixels. Also change your foreground color to white.

Step 9

Create a new layer.Grab the blend tool and select the FG to transparent gradient with the shape radial and apply it as shown below.Then change the layers opacity to 50.

Step 10

Keeping the selection , create a new layer and apply the same again gradient as shown below.Then change the layer’s opacity to 20.

Our image is almost ready.Now you can add a final touch to the image by using some shiny brushes.

    Great tutorial, awesome result!!!
    I’ve just now learned to add and use script-fu! Added brushes too, but can’t fine one with that shiny effect!
